CANFORD MAGNA CHURCHES - MISSION TO ROMANIA
The past few weeks have flown by as our RAG team have worked very hard to organize the family fun day which took place on 18 July. It was a disappointment that more people weren’t able to come along and enjoy themselves in Antony and Diana Panes’ beautiful “back garden” but nonetheless, the event exceeded our expectations and we were able to bank almost £400 to go towards the new Selah school which Phoneo have just started working on in Reghin. Thank you so much to all those who did come along and a very special thankyou to those who helped beforehand, on the day and afterwards [as the rain began to patter down after a lovely sunny afternoon].
I’m somewhat ahead of myself as before that Richard and his merry team enjoyed a very successful time with Phoneo from 13-20 June. There were one or two slight hitches and rain all day on the Wednesday but the house they set out to help build was substantially complete before they left. It has since been completed by local Phoneo staff and the lady is so happy with her new home and can’t stop telling others how great a blessing it is! Most of this team were new to Phoneo but everyone got on well and some very valuable lessons have been learned for the future. Some of their comments were:
· “a wonderful experience”
· “far better organized [at that end] than previous trips”
· “a great experience and a blessed time”
· “best time of my life – such fun working so hard!”
The next event on the calendar is our visit to Little John’s House to help with their Summer School from 15-22 August. Eight [mainly] young ladies, nearly all from St Barnabas’s, have been meeting together regularly and are now pretty well organized. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, any donations towards the cost of play materials will be most welcome so please do contact either Angie Meyer [01202 887187] or Teresa White [01202 884540] if you would like to contribute to a fun time for
severely under privileged children, with learning difficulties. This will be a very rare occasion when they are able to enjoy themselves mixing with other children and so do please consider helping in a small way.
On 6 September, Mervyn Young and Ian Pratt, both from the Lantern, will be leading another “mixed bag” of seven persons who are aiming to show that retirees, an accountant and others, can become very good “blockers” for a week! A few days ago we heard the excellent news that Phoneo are about to make a start on their Selah school project. This will be a large 2-storey building measuring some 17 x 7ms and very shortly the foundations are being laid professionally. Leon, a professional builder has been hired to oversee the task and we pray he will immediately develop good working relationships with everyone, including ourselves. When they arrive, Mervyn’s team will commence building the walls [“blocking”] so it has to be done well. Others, including teams from Holland, ourselves again at the end of September and locals will then continue with the task.
Sorry to mention it but as winter approaches, the most urgent need by Phoneo is for younger childrens’ “wellies” and warm winter tights. Also, for the older children, they are running out of socks.
Any other items of winter clothing [children and adults] will be most welcome and if you can spare or buy any of these items please get in touch with Walter Meyer [01202 887187] or myself.
If there’s insufficient time before Mervyn’s team leaves, there’ll be another opportunity to take things when Walter leads a building team to Reghin from 26 Sept-3 October. There are still vacancies for his team so if you, or anyone you know, is interested but you’d like more information, do please contact Walter or myself immediately.
On the social front, we expect to be hosting a couple of events in the autumn but have no details to date- so watch this space or keep checking on our new web-site – www.missiontoromania.org.uk
With every blessing
