 Dear Friends

CANFORD MAGNA CHURCHES -  MISSION TO ROMANIA

So soon after the last issue you say! Well, there’s been a lot going on and a couple of forthcoming events to promote.

Eleven days ago Mervyn and his team arrived back safely after a busy week with Phoneo in Reghin.  They were blessed with good weather, except on the last day and managed to complete rather more of the new school building than we’d dare hope.  Phoneo greatly enjoyed having the team with them and said they were a blessing both in their work and in the times they were able to spend together – “It was amazing for us to see the walls of this building we’ve dreamt of for so long, finally being raised!”.

As well as building, some of the team enjoyed taking part in a prayer walk around one of the Roma communities and another highlight was the Sunday morning service -  variously described as:

·         Worth the trip in itself – a tremendously exciting experience

·         Great preach by Ronald and full of uplifting stuff

·         Found Phoneo team really friendly and enjoyed the church service

·         Attending the Sunday service and the prayer walk were both great additional experiences.

During the following week a Dutch team have continued with the school walls and are now up to first floor level.  It’s really good that Phoneo are getting others involved as well as ourselves.

Next Saturday [26 Sept] Walter Meyer and three others will be flying out and whilst the team is smaller than we’d hoped, Phoneo are not unduly concerned for in their words - “every help is welcome and we’ll make it work”.  It could have been worse for one of the original four had to drop out fairly late in the day but God answered our prayers and a willing replacement came along just last week.

Thank you again to all those who’ve given clothing and footwear to help the Roma people through the coming winter when temperatures often drop below -20C – and we complain about our weather!.

There are two social events in the autumn for you to enjoy and hear more about exactly what we’ve been up to this year:

·         On the afternoon of Sunday 8 November [2-30pm], Jill Searle and Peter Miller will again be giving a musical recital.  Those of you who’ve heard them before will not want to miss this opportunity – tell your friends about it so we can fill the Lantern Hub to over-flowing and have a really good time together. This a free event and hot drinks and cakes will be available during the interval

·         Another of our very popular quiz evenings hosted by Graham Dunn is being held on                            14 November at St Barnabas 7pm for 7-30pm start.  Tickets @ £7-50 which include a ploughman’s supper, soft drinks  and prizes,  will be available from each church office from early October.  You can make up your own team or, if not, just come along but do please get your ticket[s] well in advance  as we need to know for catering purposes.

 Dear Friends

CANFORD MAGNA CHURCHES -  MISSION TO ROMANIA

With very grateful thanks for your support and hoping you’ll take the time to read this and find it of interest.

We give thanks that just over a week ago our team who helped at Little John’s House with their Summer School arrived back home safely. Teresa writes:

“A team of eight; three ladies and five teenage girls travelled to Cisnadioara, Sibiu, Romania to run a week’s Summer camp at Little John’s house, a home for disabled and orphaned children. After a two hour delay the team finally arrived at their destination at 4.30 am on Sunday 16th August.

We joined with some volunteers who had stayed on from the previous week and spent our mornings catering for between 20-25 children from the local Orphanages, hospital and neighbouring villages.

The wet weather made things a little difficult as most of the activities had to be placed indoors or undercover and space was limited but with some creative thinking and plenty of volunteers to help, we had a great week building relationships, playing and generally having fun with the children who attended.

In the afternoons we were generally free to explore the local area, visiting an outdoor museum, a spa, the local shopping complex, nearby Sibiu centre and a traditional restaurant.

An enjoyable week; lovely food, amazing children, great hosts and lots of laughs we all left happy with everyone saying how much they would like to go again”.

In five days’ time [5 September] our second working visit to Reghin this year to help Phoneo, will be taking off from Luton and hoping they too don’t suffer a two-hour long flight delay!  We have heard from Phoneo that the new school foundations are expected to be ready so Mervyn’s team will be making a start on the walls. One or two of the team will also be helping out on other Phoneo projects and we shall look forward to hearing how they get on so that we can offer alternatives to building work for others who may in thinking of going out next year.

However before that, Walter Meyer takes a third team out to Reghin on 26 September to continue working on the school. There are still vacancies for his team so if you, or anyone you know, is interested but you’d like more information, do please contact Walter [01202 887187] or myself immediately – it’s not too late but this will definitely be the last chance to go this year.

Very many thanks to those of you who’ve given items to help the Roma people and particularly their children, enjoy a warmer and drier winter – ie. clothing and footwear.  There is still an urgent need for more children’s wellies so if you have any your children have grown out of, or know of others, please can we have them by 20 September.

We shall be having two social events in the autumn for you to enjoy and hear more about our activities this year:

·         On the afternoon of Sunday 8 November [2-30pm], Jill Searle and Peter Miller will again be giving a musical recital.  Those of you who’ve heard them before will not want to miss this opportunity – tell your friends about it so we can fill the Lantern Hub to over-flowing and have a really good time together.
                                                                                                                                                                                       ·         St Barnabas will be the venue for another of our very popular quiz evenings hosted by Graham Dunn on Saturday 14 November.  Tickets will be available from each church office from mid September,  so don’t hesitate but get them as soon as you can.
